Why it’s important to know your visitors

Let’s start this article with a question (oh rats, now I started with a statement). If you buy a birthday present, do you just buy something for anyone? Or do you carefully think about the person, and base your gift on that? And when you are buying someone a housewarming gift…do you just buy anything? Or do you carefully check out their house first, ask about the colouring and style, and base your gift on that? Maybe the wrong question if you’re a guy, because us guys are brilliant when it comes to buying the wrong stuff. But that’s not my point. My point is that you at least try to give someone something that he or she will like. Why treat a website differently?

When I was younger, I really wanted to build a website. My dad asked me why and I said: ‘just because’. There are still a lot of people who build a website ‘just because’ and that’s fine when you’re doing it for fun. If you’re doing it to make money or to promote your business, then you need a better reason. Making money and promoting your business are considered goals, not means. Because you know what you want to do, but you need to figure out how you’re going to do it. Why? Because Joe the Plumber doesn’t care that you want to make money or promote your business. But when you write articles about plumbing and there’s a plumbing ad next to it that he clicks on, then you suddenly have a goal and the means to reach it.

This is why you really need to think about who your visitors are going to be, especially if you already have a website. Who is it that reads your articles? Is there a way to get him or her more interested? If there is, more people will come and more money will be made. And it’s not just about the content, but also about the way your website is built up. Does your visitor have a large display, a fast connection? Or is it better to make your site more compact and less heavy on the traffic. Only one way to find out: know your visitors!
