What screen resolution should you build for?

People, men in particular, are obsessed with the size of visual equipment (they say it’s some sore of compensation). It doesn’t matter if you’re talking about a computer screen or a television, if it’s bigger, it’s better. The fact that there is such a difference in available screen sizes, makes it very difficult for a web designer to decide what screen resolution to pick when it comes to designing a web page.

Of course it’s tempting to build a webpage that’s as big as possible, this time not for the compensation thing, but simply because the bigger the size, the more space for content and ads. But don’t forget, not everyone has a computer screen as big as Donald Trumps ego. Believe it or not, there are still people working on a computer screen that’s about the size of a big pumpkin. And your huge website would not look good on a 15 inch monitor, you don’t have to be a genius to see that.

But those are extremes, there a whole world between 15 inch and 24 inch and that is what creates the problem. If you’re waiting for me to tell you what screen resolution you should design your webpage for, then wait a little longer, because I’m not going to. Not because I don’t want to (really, I’m a nice guy) but simply because I don’t know. To know what screen resolution you should build for, I would have to know who your visitors are, which means you would have to know who your visitors are.

Do you? Because that’s the most important part, knowing who it is that visits your site. And I don’t mean social security number, credit card details etc, but statistical details like the kind of browser they use, the screen resolution they use etc. If you know that, you can make an estimate about what the best screen resolution is. You’re not going to keep everybody happy, but at least make the largest part of your visitors happy. And you don’t have to send an e-mail to everyone, you can just install statistics software like Analytics.
