How The Competition Between Microsoft And Google Is Good For Website Owners

Today the most two important words that we commonly come across are computer and internet. They have totally revolutionized the entire world and are also helping towards manifold increase in the pace of development of technology.  But the company which remained in the picture from the very beginning is Microsoft and is still continuing to hold that important position in the field of computer science.

Bill gates, the chairman of Microsoft first introduced the concept of multimedia computers and also imposed patents. So, till date money from the computers that are sold in each and every corner of the world, a handsome percentage of it goes to Microsoft. And to destroy this monopoly of Microsoft many new companies emerged but they all lost direction except the one named Google.

The company Google which is an open source company was started by a group of Harvard students. They first came up with the most advanced search engine to search for web pages over internet and named it as Google. Then, slowly and steadily this company started capturing the global field of internet to eradicate the monopoly of Microsoft.

Today both Microsoft and Google are well established companies and they are always competing against each other. As we all know when ever there is a competition between two companies it’s the customers who gets benefited. Same is the scenario here as website owners gain from the battle of the technology giants.

How The Competition Between Microsoft And Google Is Good For Website Owners

As we know, the main revenue that can be generated is from the advertisements that are generated on pages like Google and Microsoft. However, as the competition has heated up, the organizations have come up with innovative ways to attract advertisers. Thus, what would have cost a fortune for any new web host to promote his web business, is now a matter of following certain easy registration steps.

The Google AdSense, for example has been a rage among internet marketers and has created a lot of revenues for both the users and Google. On the other hand, Microsoft has come up with great products and server operating systems which have made the job of website owners very easy. Three years ago, it used to be a very tough job to control the system administration of your website server. However, with tools and applications from Microsoft, it is just like a walk in the park.

Google is not far behind either, as it has targeted the developers in the open source community. So far, it has been able to provide a platform to many developers building their applications on Google APIs.  These applications are well customized to generate high revenues due to the compatibility with Adsense as well.

How The Competition Between Microsoft And Google Is Good For Website Owners

All in all, if you are a website owner, there is no better time to be in the business and reap the benefits of a tight competition.

Seven Most Path-Breaking Developments In Internet

Most of our work are done through computers, but it wouldn’t be this popular had there not been the internet. The internet is a result of intelligent thinking by some visionary people in the early 1960’s. Internet is the abbreviation of “internet working” and it basically started in the form of a military project in the United States but now, several decades later with the widespread technological advancements it has become user friendly and is facilitating our lives by serving the private and public sectors with the exchange of data between hundred countries worldwide.

The E-mail

The email is said to be the most popular and most “killing” feature developed in the field of internet. Today every person on Earth has an email address with the free service providers such as Google, Yahoo and Hotmail. The email serves as a means of communication for many online businesses. Gradually with progress, new features were added like auto-responder, anti-spam filter even an anti-virus which keeps emails free of viruses.

World Wide Web (www)

The Internet and the World Wide Web are often used as synonyms to each other. Berners-Lee are credited with the development of the World Wide Web which technically represents the interlinking of documents, images and other sources linked by means of URL elements and present on the websites.

Search Engine

The search engines were an attempt to organize the Internet even before www. The first engine to come into existence was Archie search engine. Pages on the web were tracked and people could find things using search engines as well web directories. Yahoo and AltaVista were the search engines which gained popularity till Google made its mark because having the advantage of relevancy marking which meant searching for the best result in the shortest span of time.

File Transferring and Sharing

The advantage of file transferring came into existence ever since internet has been created. The File Transfer Protocol was created to ensure the safety of the files which are transferred through a server as attachments to emails by running an FTP program. Nowadays free FTP software solutions allow safely connecting and transferring files.

Mobile Phones and the Internet

The first mobile phone with internet connectivity came into news in 1996 with the Nokia Communicator. Wireless Application Protocol or WAP is a networking model on which the internet services of the mobile device operate on. With this advent of mobile internet there has been a remarkable increase in access of Internet from a mobile phone rather than a PC.

IP address and Wi-Fi

Internet protocol is the main functional unit of the Internet which has to be very carefully assigned so there is organized distribution of unique names to web sites throughout the world. Wi- fi is wireless technology to provide internet connection through radio waves because of which now every person having a wireless connection can access internet anywhere even in moving vehicles.

E-commerce

With the growth of the internet, many small businesses create their own online shop and promote their products via a large audience resulting in more profit and publicity which is possible through e-commerce.

Due to technical development in future we would have internet removed of its shortcomings and with more reliability and security.

Stages of development of the Internet

Stages of development of the Internet

Internet is an essential part of one’s life in today’s world. It is a very vast connection of networks and computers over the entire world. Internet carries a large amount of information. It connects all the computers globally through millions of networks and the World Wide Web. The Internet can be used for sending mails, watching videos or TV, reading newspapers and books. Everything has come up on the internet making all of it accessible easily. There are chat rooms, social networking sites, blogs, B2B websites and many other facilities. It also has certain protocols and norms to follow. It uses TCP/IP while serving all its users around the globe.

States of development of the Internet

Before Internet

Before the existence of the Internet, all that the world had for communication of data was telegraph, radio, TV and other means of broadcasting. With the advent of the Internet the scenario completely changed.

Origin of the Internet

The Internet was originated around the year 1960 as a result of research done by the military services of the United States in order to develop error free computer systems. IT was later commercialized in 1990 as international network and famously was known as the internet.

The usage and access of internet is not defined by any organization. There exists a maintainer organization which assigns the domain name as well as the IP address which define the location of any website or page over the internet. They represent the identity of a webpage.

States of development of the Internet

Different terminologies for the Internet

The Internet is technically a short form for inter network as it a huge connection of many computer networks. It is also widely referred to as ‘the net’. These connections are facilitated using URL’s and hyperlinks.

States of development of the Internet

Stages of development in the Internet

Initially it was limited to governmental organizations and secret programs. There the interconnection between computers was using the principle of message blocks. With its commercialization it made a great impact on the society. At the beginning the features were the normal surfing of web pages, access to electronic mail, chat rooms and forums. Here the concept of packet switching was being made use of.

Networks leading to the Internet’s development

The first network was ARPANET. It was first developed by a Professor from MIT and its first connection was between University of California and the research unit at Stanford. This gave birth to the core of the Internet. It is still being used at a small scale for some functions. Here the networks were made to take care of reliability.

The next network was X.25.  It was based on packet switching and it made use of telephone lines. The networks that followed later were UCCP and NPL. All the above mentioned networks were merged to give birth to the Internet. Unlike ARPANET, here hosts took care of reliability. Sites facing difficult to connect directly to the Internet created gateways and accessed it for sending mails. But in case a site has a discontinuous connection then it used UCCP and waited for the gateways between the net and these networks.

States of development of the Internet

The internet is growing and would become a massive platform for sharing information in some or the other form. There are many browsers used for accessing the net. First one was Netscape navigator. Now there are many like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome etc.

Witness the next stage of growth of the Internet by hosting web applications on Bounceweb Webhosting!

Port Description and Functioning

Port Description and Functioning

Port is a terminal or a location present in a system through which data is exchanged. The internal data of the computer can be accessed by another external device and data can be input to the processor memory from other mass storage devices. Port is like an interface between the processor and the external device. Different systems have different type of ports. They even vary in number in every system. Each port is assigned with a port number and has its own specific function. Port can also be realized as software which is application specific when used for communication purposes. In this case the port number and the Internet Protocol addresses also known as IP address are the main features that help in the identification of a port. Port numbers can also be observed at times in the URL’s of different websites. The port assigned to HTTP is port 80.

Port Numbers

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority also abbreviated as IANA assigns the IP address and port addresses. They even categorize the port numbers into different sections which include dynamic ports also known as private ports, registered ports and ports that are well known which range from 0 to 1023.

FTP is assigned with port 21 while Telnet is assigned with port no 22. The most common ports are port 80 for HTTP and port 25 for SMTP.

Port Description and Functioning

Port 80 description

It is the port assigned to Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP). This port receives data from the web client and the client is supposed to connect to the web server using this port. This port is the most widely used port as it connects a user to the World Wide Web famously known as the ‘WWW’. When we type a address on the address bar of the web browser then it connects to port 80 and waits to get connected to that location. This port is very prone to attack my malware as it is most widely used. Hence this port should never be kept opened if it is not being used.

Port Description and Functioning

Port 25 description

This port is assigned to Simple Mail Transfer Protocol abbreviated as SMTP. This port is used for that transmission of e-mails via the internet. It is utilized by e-mail servers in order to send and receive e-mails. Some mail servers not using port 25 can connect to it and send their mails using a technique called relaying. There are selected ISP’s which do not allow relaying to take place.

Port Description and Functioning

Port 20 description

This port is designated to FTP also known as File Transfer Protocol. This port is also very commonly used. Its basic usage is for the purpose of transferring files i.e. uploading or downloading them from a server. After the file to be downloaded is selected it is connected to port 20 and the file is searched and then downloading takes place. The other FTP port is port 21 but it is used for a totally different purpose i.e. commanding.

Port Description and Functioning

There are many ports associated with the WWW which help in performing different functions or actions with the help of the internet like accessing the web pages, mails, downloads and uploads, commanding etc which make life convenient.

Importance of documentation for community driven projects like joomla

Importance of documentation for community driven projects like joomla

Joomla is one of the most widely used “content management systems”. Due to its open source nature, it has gained huge popularity. It has also developed a very customisable modular code structure. The contribution of open source communities behind the huge development of the joomla platform is very evident. So it is very important that a transparent documentation system is followed in such community projects. Without proper documentation it is very difficult for other developers to understand the code developed by any user and to reuse the code or make it more efficient.

Transparent open source code

Open source code is the backbone of community driven softwares. For developing such softwares people from various parts of the world work together. So, transparent communication through documentation process is very essential. Numerous developers work in parallel developing various parts of the software. Without proper documentation, it would be very difficult to work on parts of the program.

Easy understanding

Without proper documentation it is almost impossible for people around the world to work simultaneously on a same project. Proper documentation in easy language is very important. This also saves a lot of time for the next developer. Communication is a very important aspect in such community driven softwares and so is the need for a proper documentation technique.

Code modification and reusability

Open source software stand on one basic principle – building efficient and reusable codes. Documentation plays a vital role in understanding codes developed previously. If a new person is interested to develop an on-going software project, then he has no other option but understand the software through its documentation. Now if the documentation is not correct then it becomes extremely difficult for the developer to understand the source code all by himself. This leads to inefficient use of even good source codes and limits their usability while simultaneously also hinders the process of application development and this should be taken care of.

Importance of documentation for community driven projects like joomla

Modular documentation

Modular documentation is another step closer to systematic documentation. The idea is that the documentation of various smaller parts of the application is separately made available in modules.  These modules are re-usable and can be compiled into larger documentation. The advantage is easier maintenance with increased indexing and search capabilities. The modules are so written that they make sense even when they are all by itself and not a part of the main documentation. This also enables us to easily export the documentation in various formats as PDF, XML, DocBook, CHM etc

Online tutorials

Documentation is also widely used for online tutorials. Unless properly documented, the information shared will cause a lot of confusion among readers. Online tutorials are also an important part for softwares that are newly released. So proper documentation in online tutorial eases the process of learning a software environment and thus helps to gain popularity, which is also a key factor for success in case of community driven softwares.

Importance of documentation for community driven projects like joomla

Proper systematic documentation is a must in case of softwares like joomla. It is the reason behind its huge growing popularity and success.

RSS Feeds using Joomla!

RSS

RSS Feeds using Joomla

RSS stands for Rich Site Summary, and is a format which is used to deliver regularly altering web content. For example, several news-websites, blogs and online publishing sites provide RSS links so that internet users can easily get to know about any updates in their websites. For people who regularly surf the Internet, RSS feeds are an efficient and simple way of staying updated about the latest news, without having to visit the websites every time. The RSS feed automatically retrieves the latest updates from the websites and displays it in the feed. RSS users can protect their privacy, by not having to join the websites mailing list and be victimized by hundreds of unwanted newsletters, just for the sake of staying informed. There are several different RSS readers available on the Internet which can support different platforms like Linux, Windows or Mac.

Joomla

RSS Feeds using Joomla

Joomla, on the other hand, is a popular Content Management System (CMS), which is utilized for developing and building web sites and other web based applications. It is hugely popular due to the fact that it is simple, flexible and easy to use, even by people without extensive technical knowledge. Joomla is an open source platform, which is freely available. Joomla has an inbuilt RSS aggregator, called the ‘syndicate’, so there is no real need of downloading any extension. However, there are a couple of other options also, which may be used to include RSS feeds in a website. The Syndicator can display news or updates ordered by categories.

The first step is to log into the administrator account of the Joomla web page, and go to the News Feeds option from the Components option. From the Manage Categories option, a new category is added by clicking on the New option. A page appears where the administrator will have to provide different information regarding the new feed category that is to be included in the web page. The different fields that need to be filled up include the Category Title, where the user needs to enter the name of the category as he wants it to appear in the menu; the Category Name, which shows the name of the feed in the web page; the Image field can be used to insert any image related to the feed category; the Access Level can be used to limit the access to the feeds only to certain users. All the field names are self-explanatory. After all the required fields have been filled up, the page is saved.

The next step is to find a suitable website, which provides the facility to syndicate their content, and then decide on the feeds that should be included in the site. Websites which have the RSS logo, provide the RSS feed facilities. Most news sites, blogs, fan archives, and gaming forums provide RSS feeds. After selecting the required RSS feed, paste the link in the Link field in the Manage News Feeds page. There are a number of other parameters, such as maximum articles or updates allowed, or cache time. Then the settings are saved. After this, the website is ready to receive RSS updates.

Browser Peculiarities in AJAX

June 2nd, 2011 | Posted under The Internet, Web Hosting Tips | No Comments »

Browser Peculiarities in AJAX

Browser Peculiarities in AJAX

Users of Mozilla Firefox may have come across the following instance:

uncaught exception: [Exception… “Component returned failure code: 0x80040111 (NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE) [nsIXMLHttpRequest.status]” nsresult: “0x80040111 (NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE)” location: “JS frame :: http://localhost:3000/ajax2.html :: anonymous :: line 21” data: no]

The same exception, in case of Google Chrome, is somewhat like:

Uncaught Error: INVALID_STATE_ERR: DOM Exception 11
This instance arises when the system runs into a ‘bug’ while accessing the ‘status’ of the complete handler, and the ajax request timed out. This results in a browser exception. The instance is easily reproducible, utilizing jQuery. The only way to work around this browser peculiarity is to examine the test status that jQuery provides, before trying to access the xhr.status. And possibly it is the only way to check the ajax status without the risk of running into an exception again. For example, this can be achieved by the following code:

complete: function( xhr, text_status )

{

if ( text_status == ‘timeout’ )

{

alert( ‘TIMED OUT’ );

}

else

{

alert( xhr.status );

}

}

According to the W3 working draft, for XMLHttpRequest object, when the ReadyState of an XMLHttpRequest is 3 or 4 then the status and statusText is available. After that, these values can determine if the request was successfully processed or not. Even though more often than not, the status is 200 when the request is successful, and 404 when the request fails. However, this does not cover the case when the network connection link fails while the XMLHttpRequest is either sent, or is still being sent.
Different browsers have different values of readyState, status and statusText to deal with different cases of browser exceptions and peculiarities. For this particular browser peculiarity, in  a Firefox installation running on a Windows XP platform, both the status as well as the statusText are shown as ‘exception thrown’. Internet Explorer, running on the same platform, shows a status of 12029, and unknown as statusText. For Opera, the statusText remains empty, while status is a ‘0’. Safari shows both fields as unknown. Only the readyState value remains constant in all these cases, that is, 4. End users can create their own tests by creating a page which sends an AJAX request on the click of a button. The page is loaded, the connection is severed, and then the link which initiates the request is clicked. After this, the readyState, status and the statusText are recorded, or in case any exception occurs, it is observed. Even though XMLHttpRequests rarely fail due to network failure, it is always worth it to be able to detect the failure and handle the matter properly with the client side server. The best way, is obviously to display an appropriate message on your page in case any such browser peculiarities occur. In case of a link failure, it is obvious that the error message display will not be able to display any images in case the error message widget has an image which needs to be accessed from the server. However, this issue can be resolved if the error message image is pre-loaded during the page-load. That way, the error message widget can display the error code along with the pre-loaded image. Some websites, or browsers, are instructed to redirect the user to another page,in case of any such error in network connection. However, this must be avoided as it is unlikely that the user will be able to access the redirected page in case of a network connection failure.

Importance of bandwidth in web applications

May 27th, 2011 | Posted under The Internet, Web Hosting, Web Hosting Tips | No Comments »

Importance of bandwidth in web applications

Bandwidth is almost everything when it comes to business. After the priority being given to the increased sales and reliable servers, bandwidth requirement makes sure that all the employees are connected with one another and also with the clients such that the data speeds along at proper levels, and it also checks if the applications are operating  efficiently. Server load balancing companies specializes in the best performance for their servers, especially in wide areas like the number of connections per second and the transaction rates of the companies which depends on network performance that includes ecommerce and other Web site companies. These appliances are focused for a broad spectrum of companies that requires fast speeds regardless of the users joining the network and their rate.

Importance of bandwidth in web applications

The Networks are constantly coming out with more of the bandwidth-intensive applications that include web 2.0, mobile video and Internet video on-demand. In order To meet these requirements, server load balancers have become one of the most important elements for network infrastructures. As the web application traffic is increasing because of the 3G, 3.5G, 4G, and WiMAX , its demand increases exponentially. With increasing web traffic, the service providers have been adding more networking switches, servers, routers and load balancers constantly. These service providers need to address the increasing devices, space and other issues rapidly and also they need to manage the challenges for the increasing number of these devices. Bandwidth is an important factor for the sites that utilize high-resolution graphics, flash, multiple paging, and other larger files.

Basically bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transmitted in a specific time.it is expressed in bits per second or bytes per second for digital devices and for analog devices in Hertz. Physically it signifies the amount of data being delivered to the world by a particular site through internet. Since the hosts have to pay for their range of bandwidth, we too have to. Most of the web hosts gives us an amount of bandwidth and then charge if we exceed this amount.

Importance of bandwidth in web applications

The web applications go for some fine printing stipulations where the large print offers unlimited bandwidth, but the small hidden print underneath all these remains a clause stating bandwidth limits. In other words, bandwidth is the life of internet and the web applications and should always be taken into proper considerartion.it has definitely become an issue these days that needs to be taken care of when talking about the development of web application and also when selecting a good host. Generally the cheap web hosts do not provide these unlimited bandwidth offers but they provide the transfer rate than is sufficient to run a web application. And in this world of business without this sufficient amount of bandwidth, one will fail to deliver the appropriate contents and the images to the people that may discourage the visitors visiting a particular site.  Thus, it is very important to consider bandwidth usage in web applications.

With Bounceweb hosting, get unlimited premium bandwidth!

Top five fonts used in Web designing

Top five fonts used in Web designing

Top five fonts used in Web designing

Web designing has gained a lot of popularity with the increase in the popularity of the internet and the World Wide Web. Depending on the font that you use for your particular website reading content from some sites gets much easier than other sites. One should chose on a particular font for his website depending upon the ease with which it can be read.

The most popular font is the “Old school font”. They are pre installed on almost all computers and run perfectly with internet explorer browsers. The next on the list is “Georgia” followed by “Arial” and then comes “Courier New” and after that “Trebuchet MS”. There are various reasons that web designers consider in order to choose these fonts more than the other fonts. The factors that decide the popularity of these fonts are the following

More readable

The fonts mentioned above are more readable than the other ones which depend on the font family solely and vary from one font to the other.

Portability

Fonts which are used in the web pages should be such that they can be easily read over any platform and on any machine without the need of installing that particular font before being able to view it.

Visible in different text colors

The font should be such that it is clearly visible in different text colors.

Size of text

The size of the text is also a constraint while designing a webpage. A good font is one which can be visible clearly even at very small font sizes.

White spacing

The white space between two consecutive words and letters is another thing to consider before deciding upon which font is best for you. The fonts stated above have enough white spaces in order to make the text on your website look more organized, neat and clean.

Line height

The height of an individual line should be such that it should not be too close to the next line that is there must be adequate spacing between two consecutive lines in order to offer better readability.

All these factors are very important in determining whether the text written in a particular font is clearly visible or not and depending upon all these factors, “Georgia” and “Old school font” is used widely depending upon its ease of readability. Sometimes sit may become difficult if you view a website using an uncommon font on a different platform in which the font is not installed previously. In such cases some letters may appear to be missing or the entire text may get changed and hence the website crashes, hence it is very important that you use one of the above fonts when you design your website. It is here that personalized fonts face with a disadvantage and hence cannot be used in websites. Georgia is one of the most stylish fonts yet it is simple and comfortable enough to read any text written in Georgia. Arial is widely used for writing text in books and hence our eyes are adjusted with this font the most.
